They say “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. When I was a kid I would nod my head to sayings like these, knowing that my elders thought they were imparting great wisdom to me. I wasn’t always sure what they meant by them, but I knew it must be something wise and useful. So, let me ask you, what do you think this saying means?
Today, as a working adult, I can say that it actually does mean something to myself and the other principles of our company. It means that our customer has been wise enough and has enough forethought to call us in for regular check ups on his computer network. It means they have a great, cloud based backup system and they regularly update their antivirus software. They quite probably have a version of Anti Virus software they pay for, versus the more limited free versions. They have surge protectors on the major components of their network. They update their software regularly, and they archive old documents either in the cloud or on another disk drive so as to free up space on their hard-working network drives.
They are using that ounce of prevention to forestall any major disasters which may occur when any of these things is not done on a regular basis, Thus the pound of cure. If there are no good backups, the cure will be months of trying to piece together lost data. Or worse yet, simply lost data you can never retrieve.
Remember, keeping your drives cleared of clutter is another ounce of prevention. Just like when you can’t see the counters in your kitchen because of all the clutter. Same thing. So keep your drives clean and for goodness sake, clean your keyboard and dust off your CPU.
